Storing Digital Camera Pictures

By Angela Oliver

Memory and storage are very important factors when taking digital camera pictures. There is nothing more frustrating than running out of memory at a crucial moment in photography. There are several methods for storing digital camera pictures, each with distinct differences and advantages.

On Board. On board memory is a very common and inexpensive method of memory storage that in used in some cameras and things like camera phones, which are a secondary function of a given device.

Memory Cards. Memory cards are the current most popular way to store digital camera pictures. Memory cards use flash memory which is a technology that allows data on the card to be erased and reprogrammed. Flash memory cost far less than previous memory storage devices, and is thus very popular in modern technology.

Different Types. There are many different types of memory cards. Previous models, such as the Smart Media card, have a very small amount of storage space that leaves little room for mass storage. Newer devices such as the Memory Stick or the SD/MMC have up to 2 GHz or more of storage space that provide plenty of room for storing pictures as well as short digital movie clips.

Memory technology has come a long way from the floppy disks of the 90s and other obsolete technologies that at one time were the most advanced.
