Closet Storage SolutionsBy Bill Brennan How you organize storage in your home will depend largely on the design of your home. Some homes are built with good storage options such as built in wardrobes, walk in wardrobes and in built shelving, but often these are quite basic and there is plenty of room for improvement. Although every home is different, there are some good principles which can be observed as you think about better organisation of your storage. Perhaps the first principle is to get rid of any unnecessary 'stuff'. You may find that with a decent clean out you are able to create large amounts of space and reduce your clutter. Have a garage sale and make a little money, or donate it to good will. It is amazing how much unnecessary clutter we can create in our homes and a good clean out is the best way to start when trying to improve your storage situation. This may not be an easy thing for you to do, but once you feel you have gotten rid of all you can, read on. Many homes utilize storage which was not designed for their home. Cupboards can be bought cheaply, but they rarely take full advantage of the space available. Many cupboards sit on the floor, are jammed full of 'stuff' with still more on top, but then empty space up to the ceiling. Think about building your own shelving and designing it to your specific requirements. Inside closets, there is often a large amount of space being poorly utilised. Most wardrobes have just one rail for hanging, while there may be a few tall items such as coats and trousers taking up the full length of this space, there are then many more items which are only hanging in half this space. Perhaps a second rail below these would add some more hanging space. Look out for any other areas within your closet where there is empty space, these are areas where additional shelving could be added. An often overlooked option for storage is the backs of doors. A shelf could be added for the storage of smaller items, or a rack, possibly for hanging ties is another good idea. By designing your own storage shelving you can utilise your space much more effectively based on your own needs, rather than a standard shop bought approach. Shelving can be erected simply and with greater concern for functionality and purpose than for appearance, because in most cases the shelving will be hidden from view. You will notice however great improvements in appearance as you do away with the clutter in your closets.
