Bringing your car in from the cold: Maximizing Garage Storage Space

By Garage Store

So you're not actually using your garage for its intended use? It's nothing to be ashamed of. Almost everybody does it. But you should be ashamed of how disorganized your garage looks!

If you keep your garage door shut at all times to prevent your neighbors from seeing what a mess it is, then it might be time to hunker down and get organized. Doing so will not only allow you actually find stuff when you need it, but your garage space will be maximized so you can store even more. If you're lucky, you might even be so well organized that you can bring your car in from the cold!

After reading this article, you'll be a garage-storage master!

Reducing the clutter

The first rule of garage storage organization: if it's in your garage because you don't have any place else to put it, you probably won't miss it if it's gone. Hold a garage sale and make a few bones off of the stuff that's taking up valuable space.

If you live in an isolated area, area where garage sales just don't do well, or it's the middle of winter, you can try listing things on eBay or Craig's List.

You may find it difficult to get rid of items that have nostalgic appeal or hold sentimental value, but be honest with yourself; if it's been sitting in your garage collecting dust, are you really going to miss it?

Make a plan

After deciding what to keep and what to send on its way, deciding how everything will be organized will help you maximize space savings. Remember, the goal is to make enough space to bring your car back to use your garage for its intended purpose. No need to draft up anything elaborate. A simple idea in your head should do.

Giving everything its own home

Now that you've visualized how you want to organize and sold off everything that you don't need, you can use the money you make to go out and buy some garage organization tools. When it comes to garage storage, the most common solution is wall storage.

In the past, pegboard with hooks was the way to go. These days, there are much better materials than simple pegboard. Take a look at StoreWall for example. Available in several colors, it looks good in addition to being sturdy.

Mounting brackets can easily be attached, moved, or removed. You can hang hooks or even shelving with ease. As your garage storage needs change, you can easily reorganize StoreWall for maximum efficiency.

Garage cabinets are also a great option, allowing you to hide away everything out of view.

When you're finished, you'll have a garage storage area that will be the envy of your block. Don't be surprised if your neighbors start asking you for advice! Find more garage storage tips at The Garage Store
