Wine Storage Racks Yesterday And Today

By David Faulkner

Wine is becoming the mealtime beverage of choice in many American homes, just as it has been in European homes for centuries. But as more American households become home to more and more bottles of wine, the issue of where to keep the lovely elixir until it is time to imbibe can be a problem. So thousands of American households have now, and gratefully, discovered the wine storage rack.

The wine storage rack of centuries past was a novelty usually reserved for the rich and noble. Crafted by master wood workers of the best hardwoods, wine storage racks were simply a luxury few people could afford, but, my, how the times, they have a-changed. Serviceable and attractive wine racks are now quite affordable, and hardwoods are not always a part of the package.

Modern Wine Storage Racks

Wine storage racks are now available in a variety of materials from particle board to metal to plastics; the particle board is not ideal because of its susceptibility to moisture damage, but the plastic and metal racks border on indestructible. The racks are designed either to stand on the floor or be suspended from the ceiling, and the storage capacity of wooden wine racks can be expanded to meet the requirements of a growing wine collections.

While maple and mahogany wine storage racks are available from a variety of home furnishing stores, DIYers can purchase kits and built their own wine racks. The wood in the kits is already pre-drilled and the wrench and bolts are included, so the assembly is very fast and simple.

Choosing The Right Wine Storage Rack

Corked wine bottles should always be stored horizontally, in order to keep their corks moist and prevent shrinkage, which would allow air to penetrate the bottles and destroy the wine. So wine storage racks with rows of mini tunnels into which the wine bottles can be inserted on their sides are the proper choice when the wine is to remain in them long term. Wax-sealed bottles, however, require vertical storage, or their precious content will leak away.

Prices Of Wine Storage racks

Wine storage racks range in size from those which can store a bottle or two to those which can accommodate thousands, and are used in wine cellars, restaurants, and bars. For most home small to medium sized wine storage racks are more than adequate, and will usually cost between $20 and $100.
